  2. French aviation pioneer and inventor. He
  3. demonstrated stereophonic sound transmission
  4. by telephone at the 1881 Paris Exhibition of
  5. Electricity. His steam-driven aeroplane, the
  6. Eole, made the first powered takeoff in
  7. history (1890), but it could not fly. In
  8. 1897, with his Avion III, he failed
  9. completely, despite false claims made later.
